DVD – Episode 35 – The Great Ships

This episode of the well known series concentrates on three great liners, the Olympic, the Normandie and the QE2.

The film of the Olympic was found in an attic in Ireland and the film of the Normandie was found at the P&O offices in Melbourne, Australia. When these offices closed in the 1970s, everything was thrown out into skips for dumping, including 20 reels of 16mm film. Thankfully, A Snowbow customer living in Newcastle, NSW was tipped off and drove there to rescue what he could.

The film was brought back to the UK with the help of then P&O chairman Lord Sterling who arranged for the captain of one of his ships to personally collect the film and bring it safely back to the UK.

The Olympic film was in a terrible state when it was found. However, being one of the rarest maritime films ever, it has been painstakingly restored frame by frame. The film features an entire Atlantic crossing in the early part of the last century.

The QE2 film was mainly provided by Cunard.

There are now 35 DVDs available in this series and this latest one is as good as any of its predecessors.
