6th June marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy which was the beginning of the victory in Europe.
The freedom of Europe as we know it was due to the ships and men involved in this highly successful campaign, Operation Overlord.
The Allied forces involved were mainly comprised of the British who landed at Sword and Gold Beaches, the Canadians who landed at Juno Beach and the Americans who probably had the most difficult task, landing at Omaha and Utah Beaches.
There was significant loss of life and many paid the ultimate sacrifice in order that we live in a free Europe which we enjoy today and have done ever since.
My own late father was one of these brave men and I would like to thank him and the forces involved for what they did for the free world.
We should always remember them.
