Today Lisbon has one of the largest container ports on Europe’s Atlantic coast. However the ships that visited the port in the 1960s and 1970s were very different from the boxships of today.

The 9,684grt Artico of Cia Naviera Marasia SA docked in Lisbon. She was built in 1965 by Deutsche Werft at Finkenwarder as the Tabora for Deutsche-Afrika Linien. She joined Cia Naviera Marasia SA as Artico in 1974 and, in 1983, she moved to cenargo Navigation as Merchant Providence. In 1987 she became Sagres of Uniship (Hellas) Shipping & Trading SA before being broken up by Sadaf Enterprises at Gadani Beach where she arrived on 16th September 1987. Photo: PhotoTransport

The 15,769grt containership San Francisco of Johnson Line in the River Tagus. She was built in 1970 by Wartsila at Turku. In 1986 she was sold to Cia Naviera Diego SA of Panama and renamed Diego. A charter to MSC from 1994 to 2007 saw her renamed MSC Diego and from 1998, MSC Camille. In 2007 she became Vanilla of Jason International before being broken up at Alang where she arrived on 10th December 2007. Photo: PhotoTransport
