Photo Gallery Of Yesterday – British Freighters In The Thames

British freighters are rarely seen in the Thames these days, but, not too long ago, they were an everyday occurrence. Here we look at some fine vessels visiting the Thames in the 1970s.

The 11,926grt Flintshire of glen Line was built in 1962 by van der Giessen at Krimpen A/D Ijssel. In 1978 she was sold to Bastion Maritime of Singapore and was renamed orient Express. On 11th May 1979 she arrived at Kaohsiung to be broken up by Sie Yung Steel Wire Mill Co.

The 5,531grt Oswestry grange of Houlder Bros. was built in 1964 by Bartram & Son at South Dock as the Chelwood for Wm. France Fenwick. In 1985 she was converted into a barge by Oxelosunds Hamn A/B and was renamed Stenjohan. In 2000 she moved to Mohammad Ibrahim Sahaar of Syria as Sana, and in 2001 she was sold to gold Coast Shipping of Tonga and renamed Nadi. On 15th October 2002 she was wrecked off Somalia.

The 1,581grt Saxon Prince was built in 1971 by E. J. Smit at Westerbroek for Prince Line, part of the Shaw Savill group. In 1975 she became Cairntrader and then reverted to Saxon Prince the following year. In 1976 she was sold to van Nievelt, Goudriaan & Co Bv and renamed Andara and in 1986 she moved to Waterdrive Marine without changing her name. In 1990 she was acquired by Interfront Shipping and renamed Parana Star, and in 1992 she became Pamela of Astarte Shipping. in 1995 she joined Ship Depot Ltd. of St. Vincent as Arana and in 1996 she was purchased by Elreedy Shipping of Belize and renamed Karim I. on 13th May 2006 she sank while under repair at Constanza, Roumania after a collision with the 5,300dwt tanker Zoppun.
