S1602-06-Veronica

After a long campaign to bring the former Kungsholm (known as the K4) of 1966 to Sweden as a floating hotel and museum, the ship, most recently christened as veronica, was towed away from Duqm on 9th November by the tug Kamarina bound for scrapping on the beaches of Alang after the hotel venture failed.

For the past two years, Finnish entrepreneur Johnny Sid had led a campaign to bring the ship to either Gothenburg or Stockholm but despite every effort, neither city could or would provide a berth. Alas the former P&O Cruises ship Sea Princess/Victoria will meet her end just a few months short of her 50th birthday in April 2016.

The ship was originally twin funnelled and built for Swedish American Line by the John Brown Shipyard at Clydebank, Scotland. When the ship passed to P&O in 1978 she lost her forward funnel. Once out of P&O ownership the vessel operated as the Mona Lisa, and Oceanic II before being sold to Oman-based Daewoo industries who transformed her into the floating hotel veronica (above) at Duqm, where she opened in 2011, but lasted just two years.
