To mark the end of the Second World War the Clyde river Steamer Club has produced this limited edition book, Steamers At War, to commemorate the part played by the Clyde Steamers in the 1939-45 conflict. For the first time the story of this fascinating period in the history of the Clyde fleets is told in a single volume.

The paddlers, used to conveying commuters and tourists around the Clyde resorts, found new duties, far from home, under the White Ensign. Their turbine steamer consorts served as troop- ships and tenders, while some vessels remained at home to maintain the essential ferry services to the islands.

The publication has been brought to fruition from the partially finished manuscript, draft notes, research material and correspondence of the late Peter g Herriot, a well-respected Past President of the Clyde river Steamer Club whose special area of interest was the 1939-45 war. Prior to his untimely death in 1989, Peter passed his material to Club member, Ian Hall whose commitment to the project and careful editing of Peter’s sterling work has produced a publication which will be of interest to both Club members and aficionados of naval and military history.

This is an excellent book and I would very highly recommend it.
