The 1950s was a fascinating decade for the great liners After the global devastation that had gone before, shipyards were creating one new liner after another, it seemed, to rebuild and renew passenger ship services all over the world.

The new hopeful era of the 1950s was highlighted by such brilliant, headline-making ships as the speedy United States, breaking speed records on an unprecented scale, the engines-aft Southern Cross and the mastless Orsova.

There have been many books about the ships of this era but this one is a bit different in that some of the lesser known vessels are featured.

Such ships as the Swedish Kungsholm and Gripsholm, Moore McCormack’s Brasil and Argentina, the Spanish liners Cabo San Roque and Cabo San Vicente, and the Israeli duo Jerusalem and Theodor Herzl, are rarely covered in other books. Also covered is the Greek liner Olympia which has only recently succumbed to the breakers torch.

There are some very good photographs and some interesting posters of the era all well presented.

I would highly recommend this book to our readers.
