 The design of Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2 broke with all traditions ot ocean liner construction – prefabrication, lighter materials and styling marked the ship out to be something excitingly different. Whilst steel was used for the hull, to minimise weight and restrict her draught and beam for port access, the superstructure was fabricated from aluminium alloy. All en-suite passenger accommodation was arranged on five decks, with the greatest care taken to ensure the maximum number of outside cabins.

Advances in marine engineering allowed the adoption of a more compact and economical twin screw configuration, which allowed Queen Elizabeth 2 to reach 32.46kts on her sea trials.

From the outset Queen Elizabeth 2 was intended to be a versatile ship, equally at home sailing on the fast transatlantic route between Southampton and New York, or engaged upon more leisurely cruising.

When Queen Elizabeth 2 was retired in 2008 she was Cunard’s longest serving express liner.
