Coasters Of The 1970s

Book of the month Publisher: Coastal Shipping ISBN: 978-1-902953-74-8

by Bernard McCall

This is yet another excellent offering from Bernard MaCall in his inimitiable series of books.

The coastal shipping industry went through a big period of change in the 1970s and this book records this in a very fine fashion.

In the 1950s and 1960s a lot of coastal trade was due to carrying coal for the coal fired power stations and gas companies but, by the 1970s, this was all changing. The power stations that remained were converted to oil firing by then and the gas companies were mainly using natural gas.

Containers had begun to arrive on the scene and so the type of vessel to carry these had to be very different from those that had traded previously.

The changes in design of such vessels is well illustrated here. This is the first of two books on the subject of Coasters of the 1970s and I shall look forward to the next ediition.

As always, with this series of books, the quality of the photographs is outstanding and I would very highly recommend this book to our readers.
