by Ian Collard
For the many thousands of cruise passengers that use the River Mersey, and in 2014 forty seven vessels and 54,595 of those passengers docked at Pier Head, and for the many more who like to look at the ships and want to find out more about them, this book is for you. It provides an overview of visiting cruise ships from the 1930s to the present day.
Focusing on the ships, this absorbing book starts with the glamour of 1930s liner travel and traces the story of cruise shipping on the river Mersey right up to today.
The author, a noted documentarian of Mersey shipping, has selected over 100 colour and black & white photographs as well as drawings and vintage advertising brochures to give an overview of visiting cruise ships on the River Mersey over the last 85 years. Each photograph is accompanied by a detailed caption describing the history, ownership and specifications of the ship.
This is a coffee table type of book with some excellent photographs and I would highly recommend it to our readers with an interest in cruise ships past and present.
