The port of Tangier is rather quiet these days. Following the construction of the new port of Tangier-Med in 2007 25 miles to the east, all the cargo traffic has moved from the city port. By 2015 Tangier-Med will be the biggest port in Africa. The old port in Tangier city is being developed into three sections, a new fishing port, a passenger port for ferries and cruise ships, and a new marina. The commercial traffic these days is limited to cruise ships and fast ferries to Tarifa on the Spanish mainland. Here we look at the vessels in port in March of this year.
The 2,273gt Algeciras Jet of FRS Iberia arriving at Tangier. She was built in 1999 by Kvaerner Fjellstrand at Omastrand as the Baltic Jet operating for Nordic Jet Line. She became Algeciras Jet in 2008 and serves the Tarifa route.
The 3,022gt Maria Dolores of Maltese company Virtu Ferries was built in 2006 by Austal at Fremantle. She operates the Tangier to Tarifa service.
The 2,377gt Boraq of now defunct Moroccan company Comarit laid up at Tangier. She was built in 2000 by Austal at Fremantle as the Highspeed 3 for Hellenic Seaways, joing Comarit in 2010. Comarit ceased operations in 2012.
The 4,934gt Panagia Thalassini of NEL Lines was built in 1996 by Saint Malo Navale as the NGC Aliso for SNC Mediterraneene de Navires Rapides. She joined her current owners in 2004.
