On 18th August the 9,737gt/1976 built Amadeo I (formerly the Calibur once employed by Ferryways & P&O between the UK and Belgium) went aground in the Kirke Canal, some 100 nautical miles north west of Punta Arenas, southern Chile after striking a rock.

The vessel suffered a breach to her starboard hull causing her to capsize on coastal shallows, with most of the hull laying above the water. The 17 passengers and 28 crew that were on board were evacuated from the vessel which had been en route from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt. It would appear that the vessel was steered to shallow waters in an attempt to save her. Smit Salvage was awarded the task of salvaging the ship.
The cargo consisted of two hundred cows, 40 tons of salmon and several loaded trailers and trucks. 50 cattle escaped but sadly the remainder perished. A major part of the salvage will be to pump out 200 tonnes of oil and to limit any oil/fuel escaping from the trucks.
