This was the first time a Cunard ship had gone alongside in Long Beach since the Queen Mary arrived at her retirement home in October 1967. In recent years the current Cunard fleet has saluted Queen Mary during brief visits to the harbour.

The RMS Queen Mary will celebrate the 80th anniversary of her Maiden Voyage in May 2016. The Queen Elizabeth was there as part of her 112-night Round World voyage which departed Southampton on 10th January and will return there on 3rd May after calling at 38 destinations in 25 countries.
